Time Off Work After A Double Mastectomy With Reconstruction.

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Muskegon, MI

I will be having a double mastectomy with reconstruction, expanders will be placed at the time of surgery. I have a sit down job, mostly computer work. How long were you off work after the surgery?

I took three months off for prophylactic bilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction.

My surgery will be 4 weeks tomorrow. If I had a sit down job, I would be ready now. When you go for expander fills, I would just recommend small fills. First fill (100cc), I was in agony for a 5 days, 2nd fill (30cc I was scared. Next time I'll try 40) I had no problems this week. I will say I had a skin sparing double mast. and really had no pain with that recovery. Discomfort, but no pain.

I was out for two weeks. Was told I should have been out for three months. One side only. Teach high school--with drains in and with a felt foob I made myself. And no hair. I was such a mess--but I was okay. Did my work from the desk--the kids and I got through the year together. Do what is right for you. You will be terrific!

I was off 8 weeks, I am a Kindergarten teacher. I had 3 drains and 1 was in for 5 weeks. I was out and about after 2 weeks. I took myself to physical therapy, my plastic surgeons for fills and to school a couple of times to have lunch. I always took some type of nap. You need to do what your body can handle.

I was off 2.5 weeks. I had the drains in for 2 weeks. After that, I was driving and ready to get out of the house!
