Chemotherapy Regimens

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Ladies I need some advice! Just met with my medical oncologist and was told I will be needing chemotherapy. Oncotype score 31, stage 2a, estrogen positive, no node involment, her-. She recommended ACT. However, I don't know much about chemo regimens. From what I've read its pretty harsh? What about TC? I need some feedback... I should've asked if that was an option. ( oh and I'm 29 and plan on trying to have children in the future if that makes a difference) Thanks:)

I had an Oncotype score of 30, so I started TC chemo today. I'm 45, so fertility's not an issue for me, but from what I understand younger folks only get a temporary pause on their ovaries if at all. Hope that helps. Best wishes to you

My score was also 31 (I am 58),same everything as yours and I am doing CMF - not as harsh, a little longer treatment, still very effective. so far, after one treatment 5 days ago, I feel great. ask about it. oh, and you don't lose all your hair, it thins - I hear. I'll see.

I was 26, stage I, grade I, hormone +, Her2-, oncotypes of 6 and 12, tumor was multifocal, and there was .2mm of cancer in a node (considered negative for treatment purposes).

I went the TC route by choice. My doctors weren't sure I needed chemo at all, but I wanted to be as aggressive as I could. However, I clearly remember my oncologist telling me that if we could not afford fertility preservation, I should forgo chemotherapy. Of course, keep in mind every situation is different.

I went to a fertility expert who explained to me there was a 20% risk of the TC chemo cocktail causing menopause. We went ahead and did a round of IVF freezing 7 embryos.

I am now two years out, and as it turns out chemo did not mess with my ovaries. According to my OBGY I have the reproductive system of a healthy 28 year old :).

Having said all that, TC chemo is pretty rough. I lost all of my hair, and I do mean ALL. I had digestive issues. etc. A second opinion won't hurt.

Certain chemos are more effective over other regimens for certain types and subtypes. Ask for a breakdown of the prognosticating numbers so that you can make an educated decision.
