Nails

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, I am on round 5 of chemo (TCH) with round 6 (my last thank goodness)approaching next week. I noticed last week I have a red band across my nails (esp. the ring finger) and they have become very painful. My toenails appear ok. I am in fear of losing my nails for I will be starting school in Aug. and I work as a veterinarian (thus need fully functional hands). Does anyone know how I can prevent further damage to my nails and hopefully prevent them from falling off? Thanks...Nicole

I used tea tree oil underneath the nail beds. I have only had 2 of my 10 break- but they did not come off the whole way. And they seem to be doing better without the polish on them. I polish them if I have somewhere that I have to go because they look terrible, but otherwise I leave the polish off.

I did TCH as well. A girl who started chemo same day as me same drugs walked into treatment sane day as me around cycle 5 and we BOTH had the red stripes across all 3 middle fingers on both hands! They were tender like having been slammed in a door. They lifted from the nail beds but never came off. Mine got infected and oozed yellow puss for about a week so I squished Neospirin down in there and kept band aids around them. It eventually went away within 3-4 months. My big toe same thing and stripe stayed for 2 years!

I had the same reaction to the chemo. I put on nail polish and kept them cut very short. Can't stop it from happening. My last chemo was in January and I am still in the process of losing my finger and toe nails.

H2o pick...Great idea!! So far the nail hardener I applied has worked wonders...I am now able to use my nails to open things. No worsening of the nail color so I am hopeful. I did plan on taking ice packs for my next infusion so thanks for that tip as well. Looking forward to the end of the TCH infusions...:)

I used solar oil. Ulta has it . It is pinted on nails several times a day. It is a deep conditioning polish. If your nails are already experiencing discomfort it may be a grin and bear the ride till it's over:( you can put your fingers in ice water during infusion as it freezes area from getting into finger tips. Gloves are your best friend. It will be better after all treatment is done and the nails will grow back. Taxenes cause nail s blackening. Every chem show Beau rings. Red lines inside of nail. Our nails show a window to our inside.
