Getting A Job After Breast Cancer

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Would love to hear from other cancer survivors who looked for and/or started new jobs after cancer. Did you tell prospective employers about your recent cancer battle? Do you think it affected your employment search? Thanks so much. Will be seeking a new job in upcoming months and would like to hear from other cancer survivors how they handled this situation.

This is a very good question. Prior to my diagnosis I was passively looking for a job. After I found out i had cancx I had to change my game plan mostly cuz I needed the insurance, the time off for surgery, treatments, healing, etc.

To answer your question, I wouldn't say anything about the cancx to recruiters or employers until you get the offer. If you say something it could factor into the hiring managers decision (I know that's bad but they could). Play it safe and make your skills and character shine instead, not the cancer. When you get hired then tell them. If they liked you to make the offer hopefully they can work out your schedule for doc visits. This is just my humble opinion.

What are you thinking of doing?

This is a personal decision. If your cancer journey is behind you, I wouldn't bring it up.

No - not unless it is absolutely necessary after you have been hired. I was terminated the same day I told my boss of my dx (prior to starting treatment). I did not tell my next boss until I was employed there for many months and had a conflict with a mtg vs mammo. He was understanding and surprised, but by then I was already on his medical plan and had proved my value.
