If You Are HER+ Do You Automatically Have To Take Chemo?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Oklahoma City, OK

A friend was diagnosed with a cancerous lump in her breast. She is HER+ Stage 1 grade 3. She is having a lumpectomy with radiation, but because she is HER+ her surgeon told her she will also require chemo. No lymph node involvement indicated as of yet. So my question is why does her being HER+ Mean she needs chemo?

I am HER2+. This is a very fast moving, super aggressive cancer with very high rates of occurrence. They will throw everything but the kitchen sink at HER 2 + cancer- I had 6 chemo treatments, a BMX with lymph nodes removed on both sides, and am now undergoing 6 weeks of radiation. There are great new treatments out there for this type of cancer- I was told if you're gonna get breast cancer, this is the kind you want because of the advances in the chemo treatments.

Generally. .Her2 means higher risk of reoccurence. Look at final path and see what score was..mine was 3+. That would mean chemo. Usually if Her2 score is high they don't do Oncotype-DX. ..calculates reoccurence rate or chances of. It is preventative and a good idea. I was stage 1 grade 2 no lymph and am doing radiation and chemo. Iit really depends on all the characteristics of the tumor. Hope this helps.

I was in a clinical trial for Herceptin. I had to do chemo in order have access to the Herceptin. I was only weakly positive for HER thus the trial. So far it seems worth it. I finished 1 yr of Herceptin in May. I also had no lymph node involvement but Stage 2a and grade 3.

Herceptin has never been trialed as a single agent therapy in America...so, it one wants the life saving Herceptin, one is forced to have the chemo. It is given as a single agent to triple positives in the UK. I went to 3 different cancer centers and no one would give it without chemo. Now, I have permanent lung damage from the Taxotere.

Her2+ means herceptin, a targeted TherApy. She might need chemo if she is ER and pr negative.
