Stage IV Terminal?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was just reading different opinions on what terminal cancer means to people. It sounds as if many people have different ideas on that. I am stage IV and don't consider myself terminal. When would you consider yourself terminal?

Original diag 5/2013 - final chemo 1/2014, double mast 2/2014 - diag stage IV 08/2016. I am on Ibrance and Letrozol and my lesions have responded well. They have shrunk from 5.4 to 2.1 in 6 months. Side effects are overwhelming at time. I have changed my Mobic to taking it at the evening which has really helped my energy levels during the day.

I am fighting stage IV by realizing that I only have so much energy. Trying to use more than I have results in me sleeping all weekend to just get the energy to return to work on Monday. Seriously considering applying for disability which would improve my quality of life 100% but it looks like you have to be unemployed at the time you apply which is not possible for me. I would be glad to quit if I knew I could get disability to replace part of my income but it seems like it is a catch 22. Thinking of talking to an attorney to help me untangle the steps to obtain disability.

Whether Stage IV is terminal or not isn't that important to me. What is important is that my life (WHILE I HAVE STAGE IV CANCER) is meaningful and worthwhile. Giving that serious thought every day. Stay strong.

I was diagnosed 62 years ago with stage four thymus cancer. I was diagnosed again 30 years ago with stage four liver cancer. I have also had breast cancer and thyroid cancer. Your attitude and finding the best doctors you can makes a huge difference. I never thought about the numbers, Only how to get better ! Seek out positive friends and family, develop a support system and and keep us informed. This site is amazing, has and has helped me even though I've been cancer free this time for seven years.

Well I think we all don't want to hear that Stage 4 is terminal because I have heard stories how people went into remission after being told their terminal. I just pray everyday for a cure for breast cancer.

I am stage 4 and not terminal! If you look at it everyone is terminal! I do get the same response when people see me who haven't seen me after my diagnosis...."you look so good"! I think they expect me to look like a bag of bones!! I work full time, recently received a promotion and exercise regularly and travel three out of four weeks for my job! I too am considering this stage 4 a chronic disease like diabetes! I have been soooooo blessed!!!

Completely agree with jwags. I have been stage 4 since 2004. My onc says it is not curable (yet) ,but treatable. He likened it to diabetes, high blood pressure etc. As long as it is treatable, I'm OK with that. One day at a time. You have to also help yourself.
