Shoulder Problems After Mastectomy.

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had a mastectomy last year with combined implant. I had to have the implant replaced in July due to infection. I then had to have that removed in august due to infection. They are planning to do a latimuss dorsi flap in 2018. I'm meeting my surgeon in January. However I have developed some problems in my arm akin to frozen shoulder. It probably is frozen shoulder. I have difficulty undoing my bra with my right arm. I have no swelling or anything
Is this common? At first I thought it might be… read more

I has issues with my rotator cuff which healed eventually on its own. It seems like a lot of us have shoulder problems after surgery.

I also am having the same problem. I thought it was frozen shoulder and have been going for PT. My therapist does a lot of massage and gives me stretching exercises to do. I believe it is helping. I had diep flap reconstruction in Aug 2017 but the PT seems to feel that a lot of the problem stems from the radiation. I think a lot of it is the result of not being able to use my for many weeks after the surgery.

I went online and got seven exercises to help people with frozen shoulders. I've started them today and I'm going to keep doing them until it clears up.

I have problems with my right shoulder. Initially after my mastectomy, I would wince when I put my arm in my sleeve and had trouble sleeping due to the pain. At this point, I am not in nearly as much pain as I was. I have come a long way, but I still can't get my arm up high enough to reach a bra strap area. I did go for PT and it has definitely helped ease some of the pain and regain range of motion. Because I'm still having trouble after PT, I recently went for a massage, hoping to help the muscles around the affected area. I slept more comfortably the last few nights and wasn't tossing and turning trying to reposition my arm/shoulder. Hopefully this is the beginning of much needed restful night sleep.
