Anastrazole Vs. Letrazole

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Gambrills, MD

I have asked about this before...and now I am switching from Anastrazole to Letrazole. After 11 months the discomfort across my upper back/shoulders and upper arms has really gotten bad. This is really the only area affected for me. I do not like to take much XTRa Strength Tylenol or Motrin. Heat helps-but it can be really intense at night-when I am trying to sleep
My Oncologist says the results are not statistically different-so nothing to worry about there- and I believe some of the side… read more

Good morning. They have switched my medication to letrozole, I plan to take this week off from medication and start the new one Sunday. I have been medication free for 4 days and I feel so good!! My energy and mood is so much better.... it's going to be hard to start up again.

Side effects the same but pain was tolerable once i switched. Not pain free but managed. For me it was worth changing.

I also struggled with the AI'S! I just had a bone density test and the results were a bit concerning. I saw my NP in bone health and finally she said " you can stop the medication "!
I had joint pain, fatigue, severe mood swings, weight gain....etc. Due to fact that I had a double mastectomy and removed my ovaries, and my oncotype score was on the lower end she said I could stop, and not feel guilty about it!! Hallelujah!!

So I was on Letrozole, severe crying, severe pain in joints NOT bilateral. But severe if it was in my right knee, I had to shuffle -0- dashing to the toilet, if in the left wrist then -0- watch for 2 or 3 days. My new Onco changes me to Anastrozole.

I’ve been on Letrozole for 8 years. I recall some issues with stiffness in the first 5-6 months but that all went away. I take it in the morning (never had any sleep issues but dr said best to take mornings) and don’t use OTC painkillers unless I have some injury. I started at 58 and now I’m almost 66. Still very active and I attribute my aches to aging and some osteoarthritis. Don’t think too much about Letrozole as the culprit for every physical ailment I have. Plus I’m convinced it is lowering my risk for a recurrence which is worth any minimal side effects.
