Just Finished Chemo And Meeting With Surgeon Next Week. What Does Recovery After Dmx Look And Feel Like? Hospital Stay, Lifting, driving Etc.
Yes, the mastectomy was not as painful as I was anticipating. Tylenol took care of it. I was overnight in the hospital, but awake, alert, relieved and starving! after coming from the recovery room. Ahead of time, I cleaned anything that was going to bug me- lol!, cooked and froze some things, got all the grocery shopping done (including more microwave foods, soups), and any other errands (you won't be able to drive for a bit). Moved things from higher cabinets (like casserole dishes, etc) since lifting above the head is not allowed- which is also why the button/zip up clothes are recommended. The hospital gave me a small heart shaped pillow to go between my arm and surgery site, just to take the pressure off the site. Also had small aprons that held the drains under my clothes, they were made of mesh and could be worn in the shower (being mesh, they dried super quick!) So, I had one for under clothes and one for in the shower. Keeping you in prayers for an uneventful procedure with all the best outcomes! Hugs!
Recovery after a double mastectomy (DMX) involves several important aspects:
- Hospital Stay: Expect to stay in the hospital overnight or for several days. You'll be closely monitored by nurses and doctors
- Physical Limitations: You will not be able to lift heavy objects or drive a car immediately after surgery.
- Pain Show Full Answer
Just had my DMX on 1/19 with immediate reconstructive surgery (I was discharged same day, believe it or not). I would say the drains are the WORST part of the whole thing - just super uncomfortable. I have to have my husband empty the pouches since I get lightheaded just looking at them lol. A wedge pillow helps me sleep at night so see if you can get one. Also, eat foods high in protein (helps healing process). Other than that just rest up as much as you can. Sending nothing but positive vibes your way - you’ve got this! Feel free to reach out should you have more questions ❤️
Congratulations on finishing chemo! You are awesome!
Thank you! Starting to get nervous
