I Had A Double Mastectomy. Will I Get An Ultrasound Once A Year After Cancer Treatment To Check For Recurrence ?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've already had one recurrence 2 years after the original cancer. I had no scans done after I finished the original treatment. I found the new lump myself. I'm paranoid about missing any recurrence that might happen when I finish this treatment. I feel like it's absolutely going to keep coming back and am afraid it won't be caught until stage 4. So far, it's been caught at stage 1a, then 1c.

I had a double mastectomy after the first occurrence, so I can't get mammograms anymore.

I had a single mastectomy so alter mammos with MRI's every 6 months (MRI does both sides).

I received a diagnostic mammogram on Dec 15 2022 with enhanced imaging at the one year mark after my diagnosis. Everything was clear ! Thank goodness ! Esp after having a lumpectomy chemo and radiation. I continued with herceptin infusions only for the her2 + until March 9 th. My port came out march 12 th. I won’t need another scan according to both my surgeon and my oncologist until Dec 2023; unless I should find something I’m worried about.

I didn't get any after the first occurrence, but the second one showed up a little less than a year after I finished the first treatment. Maybe they had planned on doing a CT scan or MRI a year after that first treatment. I know that I'll be asking for some sort of scan at least once a year. It doesn't make sense to just wait until I happen to notice something.
