Good Morning My Pink Sisters. June 10th Will Be Having Surgery(lumpectomy) And There After Will Be Having Radiation. I'd Like To Know ....
What to expect after surgery and before radiation. Is or will there be side effects and will radiation be as harsh as chemo was ? I had 17 rounds of chemo.
The length of radiation depends upon a lot of factors. I had a lumpectomy, my tumor was small (7 mm), my sentinel lymph node biopsy came back clear, tumor margins were clear, etc. I was offered the choice of APBI (accelerated partial breast irradiation) for just one week. I went every day for five days. If you don't meet the criteria for APBI than you could go every day for 4-6 weeks. Your appointments are usually at the same time every day. You'll check in, take off all clothing from the waist up, put on a gown, and the treatment itself will only take a short time. Every so often you will see your radiology oncologist. Like Laura said, the techs and nurses are wonderful. Wishing you the best during your treatment. Let us know how it goes.
The bane of my existence after surgery was that d#*% drain. It was so annoying. They told me Iād have it for 4 days to a week but I had it for 2 1/2 weeks!!!š
My saving grace during radiation were those gel filled nipple covers that breastfeeding moms use. I kept them in the fridge. My week of boosts just to the tumor bed left my nipple fried and the covers felt sooooo good.š
Radiation is daily and for perhaps 4-6 weeks, depending on what the radiation oncologist decides.
Radiation is every day?
For me, chemo was the hardest part of my journey, although I think I took my anger at breast cancer out on radiation. Radiation after chemo does increase fatigue. The radiation therapists are the kindest angels! They will look at your skin daily. You should a teaching with a nurse ahead of time, to discuss skin care. Probably the most bothersome is going every day. You got through chemo, you can do anything!
