In My Situation, Would You Bother With A Second Opinion?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

A friend of mine feels I should get a second opinion regarding management of controlling any further Mets to my brain. I’ve already told her I’m not getting zapped again. I’m also not open to a more toxic @ aggressive chemo than what I’m on now. So, at this point, why would I bother with a second opinion? If this was earlier on the road, I agree but now? What difference would it make?

I don’t think you have a compelling reason for a second opinion but for me, even if I end up hearing the same thing from two different people it helps me to feel more sure of my own decision. I usually like to get other opinions on anything difficult that I’m dealing with but that’s my personality. You may get the same advice but it could be delivered differently and that may give you new insight or they may explain it in a way you hadn’t thought of before. Sometimes I will pick up a new tidbit of information by talking with others. I guess you won’t know any more than what you know now unless you seek a second (or third) opinion as some of us are prone to do.

I feel it is not a bad idea to get a second opinion if you are unsure of or need confirmation on the offered plan. If you are sure you are done, might not be the right choice for you. If you think maybe, if something else was offered, you might consider it, a second opinion might be a good idea.
You are the captain of your ship. You decide.
Wishing you well!

One of the problems in finding a cure for Breast Cancer, is that we already have 20+ possible diagnoses under that one umbrella. It is definitely not a situation where one answer fits all. And we know that bc cancer adapts, that's why it becomes resistant to certain treatments over time. As daunting as the challenge is, I remain hopeful that one day, bc will just be a footnote in a medical textbook!

I agree, TeTo. Whatever brings happiness, joy, laughter and a feeling of purpose, whatever that is to a person is the best thing to focus on. Cancer does force us to put our needs first with no guilt, which is good. The experience also really drives home what a person is made of. I’ve never known myself as well and on so many levels as I know myself now. So there’s that….😏

@A MyBCTeam Member So true Nonni! There's 3 professional jobs that guarantees job security. 1- doctors,2- plumbers,3- mortician. I'm a conspiracy nut. I love thinking "Hmmm! Really?! But what if ...". Here's a crazy thought.., Population Control. This world can only hold just so many people! Diseases that target minority groups with no cure. Or healthy people that get diseases for no apparent reason. Environmental, genetic, food that's processed with God knows what ?! Notice the many food recalls lately? It's scary to buy food now! I'll get off my soap box now. But I could talk about this stuff all day!!
